XMG PRO 16 Studio: XMG’s first NVIDIA GeForce RTX Studio-certified laptop with a vapour chamber
Leipzig, 24 August 2023 – XMG is expanding its PRO range for gamers and creative professionals with the 19.9 mm-thin XMG PRO 16 Studio, featuring a 16:10 display. The Leipzig-based company’s first NVIDIA GeForce RTX Studio-certified laptop is also the first to feature an integrated vapour chamber. Compared to conventional notebook air-cooling systems, this ensures quieter operation. In terms of performance, the slimmest model in the XMG PRO series features Intel’s Core i9-13900H and graphics cards up to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, combining these with an X-Rite-certified, 240 Hz IPS display with 2,560 x 1,600 pixels in a 16:10 aspect ratio, as well as a comprehensive range of ports.
Vapor chamber ensures a slim design and quieter operation
In keeping with the ethos of the XMG PRO series, the new XMG PRO 16 Studio (M23) also strikes a balance between a gaming laptop and a content creation workstation. The laptop is powered by Intel’s Core i9-13900H with 14 cores (6 performance and 8 efficiency cores) and 20 threads, as well as either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 or RTX 4060 – each with graphics performance of up to 140 watts (115 watts plus 25 watts Dynamic Boost 2.0).
A special feature is the cooling system: it utilises a large, solid copper vapour chamber that covers not only the processor and graphics card but also surrounding areas on the motherboard, such as the voltage regulators. An advantage of this more powerful cooling upgrade lies in improved temperatures and significantly quieter operation.
Compared to a traditional laptop cooling system, the use of a vapour chamber also allows for a slimmer laptop design without compromising performance. Consequently, the XMG PRO 16 Studio, with its predominantly aluminium chassis (display lid, base), is compact, measuring just 359.5 x 273 x 19.9 mm. The low profile is a key feature for certification as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX Studio laptop, a distinction this model is the first in XMG’s portfolio to receive. Due to the vapour chamber’s robust construction, the weight is 2.56 kg.
Storage and connectivity
Configuration options for up to 64 GB of DDR5-5200 RAM and a maximum of two M.2 SSDs with PCI Express 4.0 connectivity meet XMG’s high standards. Even if the notebook is ordered via the partner shop bestware.com with just one SSD, both SSD slots come factory-fitted with a thermal pad. The laptop’s base panel is screwed in place, allowing for future upgrades or cleaning of the cooling system.
The extensive range of ports includes Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 and a microSD card reader. Wi-Fi 6E and a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port are available for network connectivity, and there are separate ports for headphones (headset-compatible) and a microphone. In total, the XMG PRO 16 Studio can natively support up to three external monitors in addition to its internal display: via HDMI 2.1 and a Mini DisplayPort 1.4, each connected directly to the NVIDIA graphics card, as well as via the Thunderbolt 4 port linked to the integrated Intel graphics unit. The latter uses the iGPU for image output but, based on NVIDIA Optimus, can offload calculations to the faster dGPU when high performance is required. All graphics interfaces are located on the back of the laptop.
X-Rite-certified WQXGA display and advanced security features
The IPS display, with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels and a brightness of 350 cd/m², has a refresh rate of 240 Hz, covers over 95 per cent of the sRGB colour space and is also X-Rite-certified. The XMG PRO 16 Studio is the only laptop in this series to feature a 16:10 aspect ratio – the recently launched PRO 15 and PRO 17 models use 16:9. A MUX switch allows the internal display to be switched between the NVIDIA graphics card (dGPU) and Intel’s integrated graphics chip (iGPU): when the display operates directly via the dGPU, this provides a performance boost in some games.
In terms of special security features, the XMG PRO 16 Studio comes with a tamper-proof hardware-based TPM 2.0 module (dTPM), which is used in the professional sector for tasks such as managing cryptographic keys – for example, for device authentication or data drive encryption via BitLocker. To improve image quality, the Windows Hello-compatible Full HD webcam uses a noise reduction feature (Temporal Noise Reduction). And, of course, the laptop also features a Kensington lock.
In addition to a 150 x 90 mm Microsoft Precision-compliant touchpad, the XMG PRO 16 Studio offers a full-size keyboard with a dedicated numeric keypad, large arrow keys and backlighting with a choice of 15 colours.
Prices and availability
The base configuration of the customisable model includes an Intel Core i9-13900H, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, 16 (2×8) GB DDR5-5200 RAM, a 500 GB Samsung 980 SSD and a WQXGA IPS display with a 240 Hz refresh rate. The starting price, including 19 per cent VAT, is €1,749. An upgrade to the faster GeForce RTX 4070 costs €295. The laptop, which is available for pre-order now, is expected to be delivered from the end of August.
