XMG OASIS: Laptop water cooling in a new case design, featuring a quieter pump and numerous optimisations
Leipzig, 4 August 2023 – With the XMG OASIS (Mk2), XMG is introducing a comprehensively improved version of its external laptop water-cooling system. It features a redesigned pump with a lower minimum speed, greater ease of use and a new housing design with additional, optionally activatable RGB lighting elements. Furthermore, the company is keeping its compatibility promise: depending on the selected configuration, the OASIS can be combined with both the current XMG NEO series of the E23 model generation and all older OASIS Ready laptops.
XMG OASIS (Mk2) now runs even more quietly
In addition to obvious changes such as a new, more compact and sturdier housing (195 x 72 x 166 mm instead of 203 x 75 x 186 mm) and optional two-zone RGB lighting for the fan and water level indicator, which can be controlled via the Control Centre, the key optimisations relate to quieter and more comfortable operation of the external laptop water cooling system. From a functional perspective, the centrepiece is an improved pump which, thanks to a minimum speed reduced from 60 to 40 per cent, enables significantly quieter operation. At this speed, the pump achieves a flow rate of 145 ± 20 L/h, whilst the maximum flow rate is 240 ± 30 L/h.
However, this is just one aspect that makes a combination of OASIS and a compatible laptop run more quietly. There is also additional fine-tuning for the fan curves of the water cooling system and the laptops from the XMG NEO series (E23). In this way, the overall setup comprising the external cooling solution and the notebook is significantly quieter in typical gaming scenarios, where the graphics card in particular runs at full load. In extreme scenarios, such as maximum load on the CPU and GPU in benchmarks, the OASIS is still able to deliver its full performance to maintain consistently high boost clock speeds for the components. When the system is idle, the OASIS’s pump and fans switch off automatically and only restart once the processor and graphics card are under heavier load.
Improved ease of use
The new case features a larger fill port for distilled water, eliminating the need to use a funnel as was the case with the older Mk1 version. XMG has replaced the previously plug-in rubber cap with a watertight screw cap, which offers greater security during transport. In addition, the RGB LED-illuminated viewing window on the rear side panel of the OASIS has been given more space, allowing for better visibility of the water level. All of the OASIS’s connections have been moved to the rear on the Mk2 version: this applies both to the hoses and to the now detachable power cable for power supply via the laptop power adapter.
XMG had already introduced hoses with a convenient magnetic mount and self-sealing connectors on both the laptop side and the hose itself as part of the launch of the XMG NEO series (E23) at the start of the year. Identical connectors are now also used on the OASIS (Mk2), meaning the hoses are the same at both ends and cannot twist.
In addition, the external water cooling system has been upgraded in terms of ease of maintenance: the side panel of the case is secured with hex socket screws rather than clips, as on the previous model, making it easier to access the now tidier interior. Consequently, even after prolonged use in a dusty environment, the radiator can be easily cleaned with compressed air. Communication between the OASIS and the laptop, as well as control via the Control Centre, continues to be via Bluetooth.
The XMG OASIS (Mk2) is backwards compatible with older laptop models
XMG offers the OASIS (Mk2) with two different hose sets to ensure compatibility with older laptops. The hoses with self-sealing, magnetic connectors on both ends are designed for the XMG NEO series (E23). However, those wishing to retrofit an existing XMG NEO 15 (E22), NEO 15, NEO 17 (M22) or CORE 15 (M22) with the external water cooling system should opt for an alternative hose set that connects to the notebook via the original mechanical port. Depending on the hose pair, the total weight, including the power cable and filled with distilled water, is 1.23 kg (hose pair for 2023 laptops) or 1.32 kg (hose pair for 2022 laptops).
In doing so, XMG is responding to the high level of acceptance of external laptop water cooling among its own customer base: according to an analysis by the company, over the last three months alone, 40 per cent of all buyers of a gaming laptop from the current XMG NEO series (E23) selected the OASIS (Mk1) as an optional accessory in the configurator. Including laptops from the 2022 model generation also sold during this period, the selection rate stands at 37 per cent – individual and subsequently sold units are not included in these figures.
Contents of the package
The XMG OASIS (Mk2) package includes, in addition to the water-cooling unit itself (120 mm radiator, new RGB fan, improved pump, reservoir, control electronics, more compact housing), a pair of hoses for connecting to the laptop, a detachable power cable to supply power to the OASIS via the laptop’s power adapter, one litre of UV-treated and deionised distilled water, an Allen key for opening the side panel, a drainage adapter for easier draining of water from the notebook and the water cooling system, as well as other small parts such as cleaning accessories.
Prices and availability
The is available now – both as a retrofit solution that can be purchased separately and as an optional accessory when buying a new compatible notebook via the laptop configurator. The version compatible with the XMG NEO series (E23) costs €199 (when selected via the laptop configurator) or €219 (purchased separately without a laptop), both inclusive of 19 per cent VAT. The XMG OASIS (Mk2) compatible with the XMG NEO series is also priced at €219.
As part of this, XMG is also reducing the price of the older XMG OASIS (Mk1): including the cable set compatible with 2023 laptops, this now costs just €149 (when selected in the laptop configurator) or €179 (purchased separately without a laptop). In combination with a hose set compatible with the 2022 laptop generation, the retail price is €129 (when selected in the laptop configurator) or €149 (purchased separately without a laptop).
