NEW: XMG PRO and FOCUS – Five new laptops featuring the i9-13900HX and RTX 40 series

Leipzig, 22 February 2023 – XMG is launching two laptop series based on similar hardware: the new PRO and the FOCUS (E23). Both feature Intel’s Core i9-13900HX processor and NVIDIA graphics cards up to the GeForce RTX 4070. Whilst the PRO 15 and PRO 17 are slightly slimmer as gaming workstations and offer a more extensive range of ports, the FOCUS scores points with a lower price and is available not only in 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch versions, but also in a 16-inch format. For these laptops, originally designed as an entry-level series, the hardware upgrades represent a significant upgrade: the FOCUS series is moving closer to the PRO laptops.

Core i9-13900HX and GeForce graphics cards ranging from the RTX 4050 to the 4070

The key components used in the new XMG PRO 15 and PRO 17, as well as in the XMG FOCUS 15, FOCUS 16 and FOCUS 17, are virtually identical. All laptops utilise Intel’s Core i9-13900HX with 24 cores (8 P-cores, 16 E-cores) and 32 threads. The freely configurable graphics card options include NVIDIA’s new DLSS 3-capable GeForce RTX 4050 (FOCUS only) as well as the 4060 and 4070 (FOCUS and PRO) with a nominal graphics power of up to 140 watts (115 watts TGP plus 25 watts Dynamic Boost 2.0). However, as the clock speeds and actual power consumption of the GPUs in the new generation are subject to much more restrictive, use-case-specific specifications from NVIDIA, the maximum values are now only achieved in synthetic stress tests such as Furmark – in line with the graphics chip manufacturer’s official specifications.

Both model series feature a more powerful composite cooling system with five 6-mm and one 8-mm heat pipes – a first for the FOCUS series and a significant upgrade. In the PRO series, longer heat pipes ensure improved cooling performance. At the same time, a more powerful fan with optimised, low-frequency sound characteristics is introduced in both model series.

In conjunction with the platform update, XMG is replacing the previously used DDR4 RAM with faster DDR5 RAM running at up to 5600 MHz in the E23 model generation. Both laptop series offer two M.2 SSD slots each with PCI Express 4.0 connectivity – the FOCUS thus receives another upgrade compared to its predecessor.

Display options with high resolution and refresh rates, plus G-SYNC

WQHD IPS panels (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) in 16:9 format with similar display characteristics are available for the XMG PRO 15 and FOCUS 15, as well as for the PRO 17 and FOCUS 17. They operate at 240 Hz and, thanks to 99% coverage of the sRGB and DCI-P3 colour spaces, are a good choice for content creation applications.

The XMG FOCUS 15 is also available with a 165 Hz Full HD IPS display offering 95% sRGB colour space coverage.

In contrast, the XMG PRO 17 can be optionally configured with a 144 Hz UHD display as a high-resolution content creation workstation: the 400 cd/m² bright IPS panel covers 99 per cent of both the sRGB and DCI-P3 colour spaces.

As the only 16-inch laptop among the five new releases, the XMG FOCUS 16 uses a WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600 pixels) resolution IPS display in a 16:10 aspect ratio. This offers a brightness of 400 cd/m² and 95 per cent sRGB colour gamut coverage.

All available display options support G-SYNC, NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and an additional MUX switch. Switching the display connection between the efficient Intel iGPU and the high-performance NVIDIA dGPU is therefore possible both automatically and manually – in each case whilst the system is running.

Extensive connectivity and VR-compatible

All three FOCUS laptops feature the same connectivity options: these include USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, USB-A 2.0 and an additional Thunderbolt 4 port with iGPU connectivity. Added to this are HDMI 2.1 and a Mini DisplayPort 1.4, meaning the laptops can natively drive up to three additional monitors. Separate audio ports for microphone and headphones (compatible with combo-jack headsets) are also part of the connectivity offering, as are Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E and a microSD card reader.

The XMG PRO series stands out with further enhanced features, allowing, for example, up to four external monitors to be connected natively: via HDMI 2.1, Mini DisplayPort 1.4 and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, all with dGPU connectivity, as well as the Thunderbolt 4 slot linked to the iGPU, which also supports Power Delivery exclusively on the PRO models. In addition, the PRO 15 and PRO 17 feature two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E, as well as separate ports for microphone and headphones; the latter is also compatible with combo-jack headsets. The microphone jack supports the transmission of an optical S/PDIF signal.

Both the FOCUS and PRO laptops feature a Full HD webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction. Thanks to their versatile connectivity options, both model series are compatible with current VR headsets – either via the dedicated Mini DisplayPort (FOCUS, PRO) or the USB-C port with dGPU connection (PRO only).

Dimensions, weight and battery capacity

Measuring 358 x 240 x 24.9 mm and weighing 2.4 kg, and 396 x 262 x 24.9 mm and weighing 2.8 kg respectively, the XMG PRO 15 and PRO 17, with their predominantly aluminium casing (display lid, base shell) slightly slimmer than the FOCUS 15 (359.5 x 238 x 27.1 mm, 2.4 kg), FOCUS 16 (359.5 x 263.8 x 27.5 mm, 2.6 kg) and FOCUS 17 (396.9 x 262 x 28.2 mm, 2.9 kg). With the exception of the aluminium display lid on the 16-inch laptop, the FOCUS chassis are made of plastic, but offer greater stability compared to the previous generation.

In the E23 model generation, the battery capacity of the XMG FOCUS has increased from 54 to 73 Wh, whilst the new XMG PRO continues to use an 80 Wh battery. Another difference lies in the input devices: both laptops feature full-size keyboards with a dedicated numeric keypad and large arrow keys. However, whilst the PRO offers fully customisable RGB per-key backlighting, the FOCUS’s lighting options are limited to 15 colours.

Prices and availability

The base configuration of the E23 model generation, which can be freely configured on bestware.com, includes an Intel Core i9-13900HX, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 (FOCUS only) or RTX 4060 (PRO), 16 (2×8) GB DDR5-5600 RAM, a 500 GB Samsung 980 SSD and, depending on the laptop, a WQHD or WQXGA display with a high refresh rate. Only the XMG FOCUS 15 comes with a 165 Hz Full HD IPS display. Starting prices, including 19 per cent VAT, are €1,549 (FOCUS 15), €1,679 (FOCUS 16), €1,679 (FOCUS 17), €1,999 (PRO 15) and €2,049 (PRO 17).

Upgrades such as from the RTX 4050 to the RTX 4060 (€158, FOCUS only) or from the RTX 4060 to the RTX 4070 (€195) are available at an additional cost. This also applies to the 240 Hz WQHD display in the FOCUS 15 (€79) and the 144 Hz UHD display in the PRO 17 (€248). Almost all laptop models are available to order now and are in stock.
